Poás Volcano - Alajuela – Cloud Forest Monteverde – Pacific Beaches of Sámara and Carillo - Arenal Volcano and Lake – Rainforest - Channels of Tortuguero – South Caribbean: Cahuita - San José


1st day  Arrival

Arrival in San José and transfer to the Hotel El Marañón in La Trinidad, Ciudad Colón, located at an altitude of 900 meters. The Marañón (Cashew tree) is surrounded by magnificent tropical gardens with a beautiful view on the Poás Volcano. In the restaurant “El Aguacate” (Avocado) you can enjoy a varied menu of New Costa Rican Cuisine. We are about 20 minutes away from the international airport and the capital of San José.

2nd day    Volcano Poás and Alajuela

Tropical breakfast, general information and discussion of the program. Then you will start a tour through coffee plantations to the Volcano Poás. On our way we stop at the Casa del Café where our guide explaines everything about coffee production and you can try an excelent coffee. In the National Park we hike to the crater – one of the biggest in the world! – and go on to lagoon Coto. From there we hike trough dense Cloud Forest back to the entrance. In the afternoon you visit Alajuela – a typical Costa Rican town of the Central Valley. You spend the night again at Hotel El Marañón. Dinner included

3rd day    Central Valley –  Puntarenas - Monteverde

We drive on an impressive panorama road through the Central Valley to Monteverde passing by the Pacific harbour of Puntarenas. In the afternoon we visit the Butterfly Garden and learn all about insects in the tropics. You stay the following 2 nights at El Atardecer Mountain Lodge with view on the Gulf of Nicoya and offering the best local cuisine. Dinner

4th day  Cloud Forest in Monteverde

Today you will get an introduction in the biology of the tropical Cloud Forest with its wide range of flora and fauna in the Santa Elena Reserve from where you can see the Arenal volcano. Afternoon free for optional activities like the Hanging Bridges Path, Sky Walk or Canopy Tour, the Snake or the Frog Garden, a night tour through the rain forest,……..Dinner

5th day   Chira Island in the Gulf of Nicoya - Mangroves -  Nicoya town  -  Pacific beach of Sámara

Early in the morning we drive to Costa de Pájaros on the Gulf of Nicoya and take a boat the Chira Island, a very remote fisher men´s island, we get to know the island and will taste fresh fish at La Amistad Lodge – the first tourist project of the island managed by a women’s initiative. After lunch we hike to Palito port and cross the biggest mangrove forest of Central America observing a lot of water birds and crocodiles. From San Pablo our microbus brings us to the town of Nicoya with its colonial church and typical central park. Then we head for one of the nicest beaches of the country: Sámara and stay 2 days at the beautiful Hotel Belvedere (2 pools) – 5 minutes from the beach.

6th day   Pacific beaches of Sámara and Carillo

Day to relax on the beach; options: boat tour to observe dolphins and turtles, and when you are lucky you can see whales. You can take a kayak and snorkel or dive or even fly ultra light.

7th day   Arenal Lake and Volcano

We cross the peninsula and the wide Río Tempisque, pass the cattle towns of Cañas and Tilarán to get to Arenal Lake – the biggest of the country: The Northwest part of the lake is a natural energy centre: Arenal Lake is a water reservoir producing 60% of the electric energy of the country and watering the Pacific lowlands, 10% of electric energy is produced by wind mills nearby and Miravalles volcano 30 kms away produces 20%! We drive through dense tropical vegetation around the lake and in Nuevo Arenal we have lunch at another local womens project. In the afternoon we arrive at the active Arenal Volcano that erupts several times a day and we observe the lava fields. Our destination is La Fortuna, where we stay 3 nights at the Eco-Lodge La Catarata, located between the volcano and La Fortuna – time to relax at the pool!

When it’s getting dark our driver will take you on a tour to the Northwest side of the volcano to watch the lava by night – an amazing spectacle.

8th day   Activities around Arenal Volcano

You can choose between the big touristic offer of this attractive area. It’s possible to hike or ride a horse to the near Fortuna waterfall, located in a deep gorge in dense tropical rainforest. You can even take a bath under the waterfall or in the river. If you are interested in a guided tour through a medical plants garden, - its just around the corner. As well there is a Canopy tour, raft tours on atractiv rivers or again Hanging bridges. Dinner

9th day  Indian Reserve Guatuso  

Today we visit the Indian Reserve Guatuso where the Family of Rancho Margarita will tell us a lot of the Indian history, medicinal plants, reforestation and artesanía. A high light will be the típical lunch of fresh fish in marvellous herbs.

Afternoon free for relaxation in the Hot Springs  

10th day Sarapiqui – Siquirres - Channels of Tortuguero

After breakfast we will take off to Tortuguero on the Caribbean sea driving trough Sarapiqui, Guapiles and Siquirres. In Muelles we will stop to observe huge iguanas from very near (2m). Our driver leaves us at the Channels of Tortuguero to stay at Samoa Lodge. We’ll get to know the amazing Caribbean Tortuguero Village, definitively a unique place of its category, and the Turle Museum. By night it might be possible to observe the turtles on the beach. Lunch & Dinner

11th day  Biodiversity of the Rainforest and the turtle beach of Tortuguero

In the morning you participate in a wonderful guided tour by boat or canoa to observe the amazing wildlife. After lunch we hike trough the rain forest. By night again it might be possible to observe the turtles on the beach. Lunch & Dinner

12th day  Puerto Limón – National Park Cahuita - Puerto Viejo

Our boat will bring us back and we go on with our own bus to Puerto Limón, the most important port of the country, and capital of the Caribbean: City walk. In Cahuita we will hike trough the National Park where we could see monkeys, sloths and snakes. There will be time for a  swim in the ocean. Then we go on to the dream beaches of Puerto Viejo, Talamanca. Our lodge Bungalows La Costa de Papito is situated 100m from the Caribbean Sea inmid a tropical park with huge rain forest trees. The afternoon will be perfect for you to take a refreshing bath in the ocean.

13th day   Beaches - National Park Gandoca-Manzanillo

Today is free for relaxing activities on the beach – the lodge has a Spa as well - or visiting the National Parks of Cahuita or Gandoca-Manzanillo which is perfect to snorcle or dive or do an excursion by boat to observe dolphins. On the evening you could get to know the bars and discos of Puerto Viejo.

14th day National Park Braulio Carillo - Capital San José

We have to return to San José and drive through the endless National Park Braulio Carillo  to spend the last 2 night at the hotel El Marañón. In the afternoon we explore the Costa Rican capital: City Tour through parks and culture centers passing the parliament, National Museum and the National Theatre including time for shopping.

15th day Return home

After a last tropical breakfast we will bring you to the airport: Bye, bye – see you soon.
