1st day Friday: Arrival

Arrival to San José airport: transfer to the hotel El Marañón in La Trinidad, Ciudad Colón.

2nd  day Saturday: Culture of the Central Valley – Capital San José

Tropical breakfast, general information and discussion of the program. In the morning we will visit the Community projekt CODECE: Their guide will introduce us to the culture of the Central Valley. After visiting a typical market we will see the church and go on to a Trapiche, the traditional sugar mill working with oxes. Afterwards we will visit a mask workshop where the owner makes the huge masks for the popular fiestas introducings us to his art including the typical musik and dances. After a typical lunch with Marimba musik we will visit the capital of San José with its markets, parks and traditional arquitecture including Central Market, Post office, National Theatre, National Park and Parlament. 3rd day Sunday: Volcano Poás & Tenorio

In the early morning we drive through the traditional town of Alajueal and through coffee plantations to the Volcano Poás. On our way we stop at the Casa del Café where our guide explaines everything about coffee growing and you can try an excelent coffee. In the National Park we hike to the crater – one of the biggest in the world! – and go on to lagoon Coto. From there we hike trough dense Cloud Forest back to the entrance. Afterwards we drive through the Central Valley on an impressive panorama road to the Pacific passing by the harbour of Puntarenas. We follow the Interamerican Highway to the North passing by the town of Cañas to get to Bijagua at the Volcano Tenorio. You stay the following 2 nights at Heliconias Lodge, a community project with their own forest reserve with hanging bridges next to the National Park Tenorio and with a wide view to Lake Nicaragua. Dinner

4th day Monday: Organic Finca & Río Celeste

In the morning we visit an Organic Finca which produces all kind of fruits and vegetables including coffee, Macadamia nuts and with a butterfly garden. Then we hike to the famous Rio Celeste with thermal waters and 2 waterfalls inviting us to have a swim. Dinner at Heliconias Lodge.

5th day Tuesday: Hanging Bridges – Gulf of Nicoya – Chira Island

Early morning guided tour through the rain forest reserve of the lodge over Hanging Bridges in one of the most impressive tropical rainforests of the country. Then we drive to Costa de Pajaros at the Gulf of Nicoya and take the boat to Chira Island. We cross the island y bus to stay at the Fisherwoman’s Project Amistad Lodge. Dinner

6th day Wednesday: exploring Chira Island

We get to know the island hiking with our host guide crossing the island and enjoying the wonderful lonesome beach where normally fisher women are seaching for shells. After lunch you can rent a bike or hike to the Mirador. After dinner our hosts will tell us the stories of the history of the islands life and specially the history of the Princess Chira.

7th day Thursday: Mangroves – Hojancha – School visit – Monte Alto

Hike to Palito Port and boats tour to Puerto San Pablo on Peninsula Nicoya through dense Mangrove woods to observe water birds and crocodiles. We drive to Hojancha and visit the Elementary school of Pilangosta where the kids learn English from 1st grade on. From here we can

hike into Monte Alto Reserve, an impressive community project to protect the water and the biodiversity of the region providing enviremental education in the surrounding schools and managing a rustic lodge in mid of the forest and trails. Dinner

8th day Friday:  Monte Alto Forest Reserve & Coffee Production

After getting waked up by a monkey concert and having an excellent Campesino breakfast we enjoy a guided tour through the Reserve including the Orchid Trail. After lunch we visit the Coffee Cooperative CoopePilangosta who sells in the Fair Trade (f. ex. to Starbuck!) with cultural presentation of a youth dancing group of Indian Reserve Matambu. Dinner

9th day Saturday: Pacific beaches of Carillo and Sámara

At 10 a.m. we will swim already in the Pacific ocean at the phantastic Palm Beach of Puerto Carrillo, one of the most beautiful and safest beaches of the Northern Pacific. In Samara, just 3 miles from Carillo we stay in Hotel Belvedere with 2 pools and a whirlpool – 3 minutes from the beach. At night we can taste a coctail in one of the beach bars.

10th Sunday: Hasta luego – bye, bye!

Return to San José airport or Hotel El Marañón if you want to spend another night.

If you want to stay some more days at the beach or in other parts of the country, we will be happy to organize transport and hotels for you!

Including: 10 days/ 9 night with bed and breakfast in double rooms, 9 lunch/dinners included, transport in a comfortable micro-bus with air condition, boat-transfers to and from Chira, qualifierd bi-lingual nature guide, entrance fees of the regular program. Options are not included.
