La Ruta de los Conquistadores: Río San Juan - Granada

Nature, Culture & History of Costa Rica & Nicaragua

Discover Costa Rica & Nicaragua on a boat trip!

The San Juan River is one of the gems of the tropical rain forests of Central America, and the Nicaraguan side is home to a great diversity of species on a huge area that extends to the northern border with Honduras and offers a last refuge for endangered species like the beautiful great green macaw.

At the same time, the Río San Juan is a symbol of the turbulent history of the continent from the colonization of the Spaniards and the North American invasions, attempting to build the first "Panama Canal", to the Nicaraguan revolution against a brutal dictatorship, which lasted until the end of the 1970s.
